What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knocked-out tooth, severe pain, or swelling — calm, practical steps for the moments that matter.
Dental emergencies are stressful, but quick, calm action improves outcomes. Call your dentist's office first — many keep emergency slots or an after-hours line.
Knocked-out tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it without scrubbing, and if possible place it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk and see a dentist within the hour — time is critical.
Severe pain or swelling
Rinse with warm salt water and use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Swelling that spreads, fever, or difficulty swallowing needs urgent care — don't wait it out.
Cracked or broken tooth
Save any pieces, rinse your mouth gently, and protect the tooth until you're seen. Avoid chewing on that side.
