Understanding Dental Insurance and Costs
Make sense of coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and how to avoid surprise bills.
Dental insurance works differently from medical insurance, and the fine print is where most surprises hide. A little upfront clarity saves money and stress.
Know your plan's basics
Most plans cover preventive care (cleanings, exams) at or near 100%, basic work (fillings) at a lower percentage, and major work (crowns, bridges) less still. Most also have an annual maximum — often modest — after which you pay out of pocket.
Ask whether a practice is in-network for your plan. Out-of-network care can still be a good choice, but you'll want to understand the cost difference first.
Ask for an estimate
Before any significant treatment, ask for a written estimate and, when possible, a pre-treatment estimate submitted to your insurer. Independent practices are often more flexible about explaining costs and payment options because the conversation stays between you and your dentist.
No insurance?
Many independent dentists offer in-house membership or payment plans that can cost less than insurance for routine care. It's always worth asking.
